Cold-blooded organisms (called "poikilotherms") maintain their body temperatures in ways different from mammals and birds. The term is now outdated in scientific contexts.
Cold-blooded organisms, more technically known as poikilothermic, are animals that have no internal metabolic mechanism for regulating their body temperatures.
Many cold-blooded vertebrates (e.g., many fishes and reptiles) do not show signs of aging.
heterotherm An animal whose body temperature fluctuates markedly; "cold-blooded." heterotroph An organism that is incapable of synthesizing its own food and, therefore, must feed upon organic compounds produced by other organisms.
