Complementary sequence ...

Complementary sequence: A sequence of bases that can form a double-stranded structure by matching base pairs. The complementary sequence to G-T-A-C, for instance, is C-A-T-G. Cytosine (C): A base; one of the molecular compon ents of DNA and RNA.

Complementary sequence Nucleic acid base sequence that can form a double-stranded structure with another DNA fragment by following base-pairing rules (A pairs with T and C with G). The complementary sequence to GTAC for example, is CATG.

DNA hybridization -- a technique for selectively binding specific segments of single-stranded (ss) DNA or RNA by base pairing to complementary sequences on ssDNA molecules that are trapped on a nitrocellulose filter.

Annealing Formation of double-stranded molecules from two single strands of nucleic acid by base pairing of complementary sequence. Usually achieved incubation at a favourable temperature.

(In tables, codons are written as RNA codons, using the complementary sequence in RNA nucleotides.) If the code is read with 3 bases at a time, there are 4 X 4 X 4 = 64 combinations of three bases.

A probe is a single-stranded sequence of DNA or RNA used to search for its complementary sequence in a sample genome.

Base-pairing between overhangs with complementary sequences enables two fragments to join or "to be spliced," which they tend to do spontaneously in a test tube.

perhaps by binding to complementary sequences on DNA or
perhaps by binding to the nascent RNA transcript as it is being formed.
In fission yeast, at least, the siRNA is complexed with one molecule of each of three different proteins.

The sequence of the bacterial att site is called attB, between the gal and bio operons, and consists of the parts B-O-B', whereas the complementary sequence in the circular phage genome is called attP and consists of the parts P-O-P'.

A region of single-stranded DNA or RNA that can form base pairs between complementary sequences. For example the sequence 5'...GACGTGNNNNNCTGCAC...

A class of RNA having structures with triplet nucleotide sequences that are complementary sequences to the triplet nucleotide coding sequences of mRNA.

Antisense strand (of DNA) The DNA strand which carries the complementary sequence to the mRNA. It is of course the strand which is actually transcribed into the mRNA.

DNA hybridization The formation of hybrid DNA molecules that contain a strand of DNA from two different species. The number of complementary sequences in common in the two strands is an indication of the degree of relatedness of the species.

The standard method uses a probe - a DNA sequence unique for that gene - which binds to the mRNA that has the complementary sequence.

HAIRPIN - A helical (duplex) region formed by base pairing between adjacent (inverted) complementary sequences within a single strand of RNA or DNA.

In DNA technology, a labeled single-stranded nucleic acid molecule used to tag a specific nucleotide sequence in a nucleic acid sample. Molecules of the probe hydrogen-bond to the complementary sequence wherever it occurs; ...

Probe. A single-stranded DNA that has been radioactively labeled and is used to identify complementary sequences in genes or DNA fragments of interest. (See Multilocus probe.) ...

DNA probe A radioactively labeled, single-stranded specific base sequence used to locate a complementary sequence among DNA fragments displayed on an electrophoretic gel.
