DNA hybridization -- a technique for selectively binding specific segments of single-stranded (ss) DNA or RNA by base pairing to complementary sequences on ssDNA molecules that are trapped on a nitrocellulose filter.

Some 100,000 oligomer probes are used to test for the presence of complementary sequences in recombinant DNAs of the single-stranded virus M13. The library of M13 recombinants has a manyfold representation of the region to be sequenced.

Base-pairing between overhangs with complementary sequences enables two fragments to join or "to be spliced," which they tend to do spontaneously in a test tube.
