Consumers and genetic counselors discussed the impact of new tests, conceptions of risk, and the best ways to communicate information.

Consumers (heterotrophs) are organisms that feed on other organisms.
Decomposers and detritivores utilize energy from wastes or dead organisms, and so complete the cycle by returning nutrients to the soil or water, ...

Consumers are herbivores, carnivores and omnivores
Decomposers are detritivores and saprophytes

Consumers are heterotrophic organisms that eat food produced by another organism. Herbivores are a type of consumer that feeds directly on green plants (or another type of autotroph).

The primary consumers include such animals as microscopic crustaceans and rotifers - the so-called zooplankton.
The secondary (and higher) consumers are swimming insects and fish.

>consumers this information in order for them to determine if they are
>interested in buying these altered products. Personally, modifications
>in plants do not bother me, but animal genetic engineering to produce
>food is not acceptable.

The producers (autotrophs) are those organisms which can synthesize their own biomolecules and enough for the consumers, too. The consumers (heterotrophs) such as us and other animals, rely on the metabolic capabilities of the producers.

Energy is then passed to primary consumers (herbivores) and on to secondary and tertiary consumers (carnivores and top carnivores) (e.g. phytoplankton -> zooplankton -> herring -> salmon -> killer whales).

secondary consumer An animal that feeds on other consumers.

a member of a class of consumers that derives its energy from organic wastes and dead organisms representing all trophic levels.

Ecologically, this kingdom occupies the level of consumers, which can be subdivided into herbivore (eaters of plants) and carnivores (eaters of other animals).

A heterotroph that derives its energy from living or freshly killed organisms or parts thereof. Primary consumers are herbivores; higher-level consumers are carnivores.

zooplankton -- Tiny, free-floating organisms in aquatic systems. Unlike phytoplankton, zooplankton cannot produce their own food, and so are consumers.

Not Chicken Noodle Soup, but the same soup that they formed in. At that time, there were plenty of proteins, amino acids, and lipids to go around. The first cells were probably all consumers. The ancestors of animals.

Organisms that feed on other organisms are able to use the energy that has been stored by those organisms. These consumers also use some of the energy, lose some as heat, and store some. Eventually, all of the available energy has been lost as heat.

time before the pharmaceutical company can start earning any payback for its investment which can amount to hundreds of millions of dollars. Obviously the company needs to earn back some of that investment, so the costs are passed on to consumers.
