Convergent evolution is a different phenomenon than evolutionary relay and parallel evolution.

CONVERGENT EVOLUTION
This is when two totally different species develop similar traits. They have come up with the same solution to a problem but from different directions. It's not a conscious choice to develop an eye or a way of hearing.

Convergent evolution
Another interesting phenomenon is called convergent evolution whereby different species of different ancestry come to resemble one another closely because of adaptation to similar environments.

Convergent Evolution: The development of similar structures in organisms that do not share recent common ancestor (e.g. eyes of squid and humans). Comparedivergent evolution; see also evolution.

convergent evolution The development of similar structures in distantly related organisms as a result of adapting to similar environments and/or strategies of life.

Convergent Evolution when sympatric species evolve similar characteristics due to similar environmental pressures

Convergent evolution.Evolution in which two species from different genealogies come to resemble each other is called convergent evolution and structures that resemble each other superficially (and may serve the same function) are called ...

convergent evolution
[L. convergere, to turn together; evolutio, to unfold]
The independent development of similarity between species as a result of their having similar ecological roles and selection pressures.

Convergent evolution: Evolution of two or more different lineages towards similar morphology due to similar adaptive pressures.

Convergent evolution The process by which different evolutionary pathways arrive at the same solution to a biochemical problem.

Mullerian mimicry - mimicry that exists between two or more inedible or poisonous species; thought to result from convergent evolution and a mechanism reducing loss to predation by simplification of the recognition process; ...

Most of the similarities among the endocrine systems of crustaceans, arthropods, and vertebrates are examples of convergent evolution.

Thus, the critics argued, perhaps the apparent monophyly of bats that was observed in the molecular studies is due to convergent evolution toward high G-C content and not homology.

However they seem less certain now that the hobbit is descended from Homo erectus. The new bones show some similarities to australopithecines; whether this is due to a genealogical relationship or convergent evolution.
