Cortex
[L. cortex - outer shell, bark]. The outermost layer of an organ or the outer, less fluid cytoplasm of an egg.

Part of the cerebral cortex; constitutes about 85% of the human brain's total mass. The neocortex is thought to be responsible for higher level cognitive functions, such as language, learning, memory, and complex thought.

Synonym: cortex cerebelli.

Cortex. Layers of parenchyma cells. These store food (as they do in the root). In the very young stem (before cork has formed), they may have chloroplasts and carry on photosynthesis.
Cork cambium.

cortex. Tissue between the phloem and the epidermis in roots and stems.
cotyledon. A leaf formed within the seed and present on a seedling at germination; seed leaf.

cortex 1) The outer part of an organ, e.g., the adrenal cortex, which produces several steroid hormones; 2) in plants, the region of the stem or root between the epidermis and the vascular bundle(s). PICTURE ...

cortex
The region of the root between the stele and epidermis filled with ground tissue.
cortex
The outer zone of an organ, ex. kidney.

cortex
[L. bark]
(1) The outer, as opposed to the inner, part of an organ, as in the adrenal gland. (2) In a stem or root, the primary tissue bounded externally by the epidermis and internally by the central cylinder of vascular tissue.

sensory cortex A region of the brain associated with the parietal lobe.
sensory input Stimuli that the nervous system receives from the external or internal environment; includes pressure, taste, sound, light, and blood pH.

cortex The outer layer of a structure.Ground tissue located between the vascular bundles and epidermis of stems and roots.
cortisol A glucocorticoid secreted by the adrenal cortex.
cortisone An animal hormone not synthesized by plants.

The cortex is made up of nerve cells of varying size and shape, and of nerve fibers which are either medullated or naked axis-cylinders, imbedded in a matrix of neuroglia.

Visual cortex: V1, V2, V3, V4, V5 (also called MT)
The visual cortex is the most massive system in the human brain and is responsible for higher-level processing of the visual image.

It's called the archaecortex because in very low organisms in evolution, this was what existed as the cortex.

Smooth endoplasmic reticulum is abundant in the adrenal cortex and the testes where it produces steroid hormones.
The smooth endoplasmic reticulum of liver cells helps detoxify drugs in the blood.

Of these, loss of Ins(1,4,5)P3 receptors and PKC in the entorhinal cortex and hippocampus correlates with AD-related neuro- fibrillary changes, as staged according to Braak's protocol.

Glucocorticoids A class of steroid hormones, synthesized by the adrenal cortex and exemplified by cortisol, that promote gluconeogenesis, the formation of glycogen, and the degradation of fats and proteins.

granular/granule cell - most abundant neuron type in the cerebellar cortex of the vertebrate brain.

When found directly beneath the plasma membrane, microfilaments are considered part of the cell cortex, which regulates the shape and movement of the cell's surface.

the monotremes are mammals that lay eggs and the marsupials are mammals that give birth to immature young which remain in a special pouch which has mammary glands within it. Mammals have a complex brain with a highly developed cerebral cortex.
