Cross-pollination. Fertilization of a plant from a plant with a different genetic makeup.
Crossing-over. The exchange of DNA sequences between chromatids of homologous chromosomes during meiosis.

 


Cross-pollination (syngamy): pollen is delivered to a flower of a different plant. Plants adapted to outcross or cross-pollinise have taller stamens than carpels to better spread pollen to other flowers.

cross-pollination Transfer of pollen from the stamen to the stigma of a flower of another plant.
crossing-over The exchange of material between homologous chromosomes, during the first meiotic division, resulting in a new combination of genes.

Switching from Cross-Pollination to Self-Pollination
A substantial minority of angiosperms have abandoned cross-pollination for self-pollination. For example, while its wild relatives continue to be cross-pollinated, the domestic tomato is not.

Hybrid: Seed or plants produced as the result of controlled cross-pollination as opposed to seed produced as the result of natural pollination. Hybrid seeds are selected to have higher quality traits (for example, yield or pest tolerance).

What is different about recombination, cross-pollination and selective breeding?

Most flowers allow cross-pollination, which can be difficult to deal with in genetic studies if the male parent plant is not known. Since pea plants are self-pollinators, the genetics of the parent can be more easily understood.
