(1) A waxy covering on the surface of stems and leaves that acts as an adaptation to prevent desiccation in terrestrial plants.

tunic In tunicates, a cuticular, cellulose-containing covering of the body secreted by the underlying body wall.
tunicates Chordates that show the three basic chordate characteristics only in the larva.

The superficial, horny part of the nail consists of a greatly thickened stratum lucidum, the stratum corneum forming merely the thin cuticular fold (eponychium) which overlaps the lunula; the deeper part consists of the stratum mucosum.
