Biology  DAF  Darwinian fitness

A unit of mass that equals the weight of a hydrogen atom, or 1.657 x 10-24 grams. Named after John Dalton, an early nineteenth century British chemist who proposed the atomic theory of matter.

dalton (Da) n. A unit of mass (also known as an atomic mass unit, amu), equal to the mass of a hydrogen atom (1.67 x 1024 g). When measured in grams, it is equal to the reciprocal of Avagadro's number.
dam n. The female parent; used in connection with domestic animals.

Dalton - measure of molecular weight or mass. One hydrogen atom has mass of 1 Da. Proteins and other macromolecule molecular weights are usually measured in kDa or kD (kilodaltons) - 1000 Da.

dark reaction that part of the photosynthetic process that, in the absence of light, utilizes the preformed high-energy molecules ATP and NADPH2 to synthesize complex organic molecules; the Calvin cycle.

~ism is more frequent in men since in them only the single X chromosome needs to be affected for the disease to manifest. In women it is necessary for both X chromosomes to be affected for the disease to come out.

The unit of weight is the ~, one-twelfth the weight of an atom of 12C. Thus the molecular weight (MW) of water is 18 ~s. (We shall ignore the tiny error introduced by the presence of traces of other isotopes - 17O, 18O, and 2H among the predominant 1H and 16O atoms.) ...

D ~. A unit of measurement equal to the mass of a hydrogen atom, 1.67 x 10E-24 gram/L (Avogadro's number). Death phase. The final growth phase, during which nutrients have been depleted and cell number decreases. (See Growth phase. Denature.

Organic compounds can range from simple molecules, such as CO2 or CH4, to complex molecules such as proteins, which may weigh more than 100,000 ~s.
The overall percentages of the major elements of life (C, H, O, N, S, and P) are quite uniform from one organism to another.

The smallest ones have a molecular weight of less than 100 ~s (~s are the units of molecular weight, for example, hydrogen has a molecular weight of one ~).

The pores are about 125 million ~s in molecular weight and consist of around 50 (in yeast) to 100 proteins (in vertebrates).

At the time ~ proposed atoms, he was trying to explain larger things in terms of smaller things with properties that added up to the properties of the whole. He did this because he felt it was a good rule to follow, explaining wholes in terms of parts.

Proton particle in the nucleus with a positive charge of +1 and an atomic mass number of 1 ~. Neutron a non-charged nuclear particle with the same mass as the proton. Electron negatively charged particle (-1) with a mass 1/1837 of that of a proton.

The size is described by the molecular weight given in the units of a ~. One ~ is the molecular mass of one hydrogen atom. The molecular weight of a protein is equal to the addition of the molecular weights of the amino acids constituting the protein.

Atomic mass unit (amu or ~): The basic unit of mass on an atomic scale. One amu or ~ is one-twelfth the mass of a carbon 12 atom (in other words, the mass of a hydrogen atom, 1.66 x 10-24 g). Therefore, there are 6.023 x 1023 amu in one gram (Avogadro number).

Acrylamide gels: A polymer gel used for electrophoresis of DNA or protein to measure their sizes (in ~s for proteins, or in base pairs for DNA). See "Gel Electrophoresis".

The sum of the atomic weight's of all the atoms constituting a molecule; the mass of a molecule relative to the mass of a standard atom, now 12C (taken as 12.000). Relative molecular mass (Mr) is the mass relative to the ~ and has no units.
