The result of a database search is a list of matches, ranked from highest to lowest, based on the probability of a significant match (Fig. 4).
MS/MS data can be analyzed by simple database searches as is the case for PMFs and additionally they can be analyzed by de novo sequencing and homology searching. This particular approach allows to even identify similar (homolog) proteins, e.g.
