DNA virus
A DNA virus is a virus that has DNA as its genetic material and does not use an RNA intermediate during replication.

DNA viruses can be further divided into
those that have their genes on a double-stranded DNA molecule (dsDNA). Example: smallpox [Link]
those that have their genes on a molecule of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA).

These include both DNA viruses and retroviruses, a type of RNA virus. (See the HIV and AIDS unit.) Viruses associated with cancer include human papillomavirus (genital carcinomas), hepatitis B (liver carcinoma), ...

Examples of human diseases caused by specific viruses include DNA viruses: papilloma causes warts; adenoviruses cause respiratory infections; herpes viruses cause fever blisters, chickenpox, shingles, mononucleosis, ...

Some of the DNA viruses can either initiate an infection (lytic in prokaryotes) cycle or can form proviruses. Simian Virus 40 (SV40) causes cancer in hamsters but not in its normal hosts.

Geminivirus
One of the two groups of DNA viruses that infect plants, the members of which have potential as cloning vectors for some species of higher plants.

Herpes simplex viruses - A class of double-stranded DNA viruses that infect a particular cell type, neurons. Herpes simplex virus type 1 is a common human pathogen that causes cold sores.

(Actually, it has three distinct regions that can be recombined, but recombination can not occur within these regions.) And two, it has a mutation rate several orders of magnitude higher than similar DNA viruses.

manages a portfolio of grants related to genome technology and coordinates NHGRI's fellowship and career development and small business programs. While no longer in the laboratory, her research interests were related to the structure of DNA viruses.
