Biology DuplicationDysgenic

Dynein is a motor protein (also called molecular motor or motor molecule) in cells which converts the chemical energy contained in ATP into the mechanical energy of movement.

(dy-nin)
A large contractile protein forming the sidearms of microtubule doublets in cilia and flagella.

Dynein A large protein with atpase activity that is a component of microtubules; the atpase activity provides the power for the movement of cilia and flagella.

In eukaryotic cells, cilia and flagella contain the motor protein dynein and microtubules, which are composed of linear polymers of globular proteins called tubulin.

Dynein "arms" attached to the microtubules serve as the molecular motors. Defective dynein arms cause male infertility and also lead to respiratory tract and sinus problems. Below are two cross-sections of sperm tails (flagella).
