Endosymbiosis: The origin of eukaryotic cells
Eukaryotic cells have evolved from prokaryotic cells by a process called endosymbiosis.

endosymbiosis -- When one organism takes up permanent residence within another, such that the two become a single functional organism. Mitochondria and plastids are believed to have resulted from endosymbiosis.

endosymbiosis Theory that attempts to explain the origin of the DNA-containing mitochondria and chloroplasts in early eukaryotes by the engulfing of various types of bacteria that were not digested but became permanent additions to the ancestral ...

Endosymbiosis is any symbiotic relationship in which the symbiont lives within the tissues of the host; either in the intracellular space or extracellularly.

Endosymbiosis is a term which is used for both intra- and extracellular symbionts. In marine oligochaetes (e.g Olavius or Inanidrillus) the endosymbionts are extracellular and they fill the entire body of their host.

endosymbiosis The theory that some cellular organelles arose by the incorporation of a prokaryote into the cytoplasm of a eukaryote.

Mitochondria and endosymbiosis
During the 1980s, Lynn Margulis proposed the theory of endosymbiosis to explain the origin of mitochondria and chloroplasts from permanent resident prokaryotes.

The mitochondrion is different from most other organelles because it has its own circular DNA (similar to the DNA of prokaryotes) and reproduces independently of the cell in which it is found; an apparent case of endosymbiosis.

Revised "tree of life" with all groups divided into their domains. Includes information about lateral gene transfer and the endosymbiosis of bacteria that became mitochondria and chloroplasts.
