Archenteron
[Gr. arche - primitive; Gr. enteron - intestine]. The gut cavity formed by gastrulation in metazoan embryos; formed by infolding of part of the outer surface of the blastula and opening to exterior via blastopore.

archenteron - cavity formed during gastrulation by invagination of the vegetal plate cells (in sea urchin) or involution of cells at the blastoporal lip (in amphibians); it will become the interior of the primitive gut.

gut (enteron) -- Body cavity formed between the mouth and anus in which food is digested and nutrients absorbed; it consists of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, intestine, and anus, though some animals do not have all these regions.

Enteropneusta A class of hemichordates whose members live in burrows in shallow marine water. Their bodies are divided into three regions: proboscis, collar, and trunk. Acorn worms.

The cavity is also called a coelenteron and for many years the name of this phylum was Coelenterata. There is no anus.
Sexual reproduction produces a free-swimming, ciliated larva called a planula.

However, in protostomes the initial opening (the archenteron) develops into the mouth, and an anus forms separately. In deuterostomes this is reversed.
