Ethidium bromide
A fluorescent chemical that intercalates between base pairs in a doublestranded DNA molecule. Commonly used to detect DNA following gel electrophoresis. Ethidium bromide intercalates between the stacked bases of DNA and RNA.

Ethidium bromide, Silver, or Coomassie blue dye can be used. Other methods can also be used to visualize the separation of the mixture's components on the gel.

The DNA bands must be stained to make them visible. Ethidium bromide-stained DNA will fluoresce when illuminated with UV light.
PCR techniques are used to produce sufficient quantities of DNA for this technique.
