Germline cells: Cells that contain inherited material that comes from the eggs and sperm, and that are passed on to offspring.

Germline mosaicism Two populations of cells making up the germline of one individual. Caused by mutation and proliferation of one cell out of the population of germline cells.

In theory it is possible to transform either somatic cells (most cells of the body) or cells of the germline (such as stem cells, sperm and eggs).

Depending on the position of the viral DNA in the host genome, genes may be disrupted or their expression altered. When insertions occur in the germline of multicellular organisms, they can be passed on vertically.
