Granulocyte

Biology GranaGranum

Granulocytes: leukocytes characterised by the presence of differently staining granules in their cytoplasm when viewed under light microscopy. These granules are membrane-bound enzymes which primarily act in the digestion of endocytosed particles.

Granulocytes
Lobed nucleus and granular cytoplasm
Different functions: some engulf bacteria; others are involved with allergies and inflammation
Blood clotting ...

granulocytes White blood cells (neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils) bearing "granules" (vacuoles) in their cytoplasm that stain deeply.

Neutrophil granulocytes - May indicate bacterial infection.
Lymphocytes - Higher with some viral infections such as glandular fever. Also raised in lymphocytic leukaemia CLL.
Monocytes - May be raised in bacterial infection ...

Three kinds of granulocytes
neutrophils
eosinophils
basophils ...

cells in response to a wide variety of inducers and confer resistance against many different viruses, inhibit proliferation of normal and malignant cells, impede multiplication of intracellular parasites, enhance macrophage and granulocyte ...
