Homozygosity
The presence of the same alleles at one or more loci. Cf. homozygote

The term coined by Bateson and Saunders (1902) for characters which are alternative to one another in Mendelian inheritance (Gk.

Zygote
Mostly diploid cell formed by union of twogametes or reproductive cells. Ovum (female gamete) fertilized by a sperm (male gamete).

Homozygosity for either allele increases the susceptibility to prion diseases. People who are heterozygous are more resistant.

Ewens-Watterson Neutrality Test: Also called E-W homozygosity statistics. Described by Ewens (1972) and Watterson (1978).

Assortative mating refers to sexual attraction between like individuals, and promotes genetic homozygosity. It is not the same as koinophilia, which is the sexual attraction to the most common phenotype.

New work involves three-generation homozygosity strategies to induce mutations in proximal chromosome 7 (human 19q homology), mid-chromosome 7 (human 15q homology), and mid-to-distal chromosome 15 (human 8q, 22q, and 12q homologies).

where u is the mutation rate, and Ne is the effective population size. From this it is possible to determine an upper limit to the number of possible alleles in a population, n as the inverse of the homozygosity: ...
