Insertion sequences are short (600-1500 base pairs long) simple transposons that do not carry genes beyond those essential for insertion of the transposon into E. coli. Complex transposons are much larger and carry additional genes.
Insertion sequence (IS) A transposable nucleotide sequence that only encodes the functions required for its own transposition. Insertion sequences are typically less than 5 kb. Synonymous with "insertion element".
analyses were presented to help derive evolutionary trees, with evidence indicating that horizontal recombination occurs within the overall framework of vertical inheritance. The existence and location of repetitive sequences and insertion sequences ...
elements which are capable of moving from one site to another in a DNA molecule without any requirement for sequence relatedness at the donor and acceptor sites. Many transposons carry antibiotic resistance determinants and have insertion sequences ...
When the transposable elements lack additional genes, they are known as insertion sequences. The most common form of transposon in humans is the Alu sequence.
