map unit
a measure of distance between two gene loci based on the frequency of crossing over between them; one map unit is equivalent to one percent crossing over ...

Map unit
An arbitrary unit representing the distance between genes, usually derived from the percentage of recombination, but also defined by the time at which the gene is transferred during conjugation.

"We are now down to a region of about 6 cM (gene map units, based on recombination frequency), where a year ago [the distance] was about 50," King said. "There are probably about 250 genes in the region." ...

The percent of recombination (crossing over) can beused as a measure of how far apart genes are. 1% crossing over = 1 map unit.
