Masseter

Biology Mass spectrometryMaternal effect

masseter A chewer.
mass number Sum of the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom; designated by a superscript to the upper left of the elemental symbol.

The Masseter (Fig. 378) is a thick, somewhat quadrilateral muscle, consisting of two portions, superficial and deep.

By this definition, the masseter or jaw muscle is the strongest. The 1992 Guinness Book of Records records the achievement of a bite strength of 4337 N (975 lbf) for 2 seconds.

The forward movement of a hinge point allowed for the precursor to the modern masseter muscle to anchor further forward in the jaw. This allowed for a more powerful bite.
