Mating can take place only between individuals of opposite mating types due to the interaction of cell surface components.

random mating
selection of a mate without regard to genotype

Assortative mating
Assortative mating takes place when sexually reproducing organisms tend to mate with individuals that are like themselves in some respect or dissimilar .

Mating
See Conjugation.
Meiosis
The process of nuclear division associated with the formation of gametes or of haploid cells from a diploid.

Random mating Selection of a mate without considering their genotype or any trait associated with a particular genotype.

Mating type
In many species of microorganisms individuals can be divided into two types. Mating can take place only between individuals of opposite mating types due to the interaction of cell surface components.

Mating system
The pattern of matings between individuals of a population, including such factors as extent of inbreeding, pair-bonding, and number of simultaneous mates.

mating system The species-typical pattern of mate finding, reproduction, and parenting of offspring.
matric potential The water potential component caused by the attraction of water molecules to a hydrophilic matrix.

Premating isolating mechanisms are anatomical or behavioral differences between two species that prevent the possibility of mating.

The mating of individuals that are closely related genetically.
inclusive fitness ...

Postmating isolating mechanisms prevent hybrid offspring from developing or breeding when mating does occur. There are also several examples of postmating mechanisms.

In estimating the pKa of a functional group, it is important to consider the molecule as a whole. For example, glycine is a derivative of acetic acid, and the pKa of acetic acid is well known.

Assortative mating. The mating of a given genotype mates with another genotype at a frequency disproportionate to that expected from random

Non-Random Mating
Can cause in-breeding depression by continuous inbreeding, non-random mating is also known as selective breeding, where the breakthroughs of Mendelian genetics have allowed us to predetermine what genes are present in offspring.

Assortative matings: Reproduction in which mate selection is not random but is based on physical, cultural, or religious grounds (see negative and positive assortative mating).

Sampling: Estimating the density of organisms (pests or natural enemies) or damage by examining a defined portion of the crop.
Scouting, Scout: see Sampling.
Septicemia: Blood poisoning caused by pathogenic organisms.

Hardy-Weinberg Law -- the concept that both gene frequencies and genotype frequencies will remain constant from generation to generation in an infinitely large, interbreeding population in which mating is at random and there is no selection, ...

If Erwin had overestimated the proportion of specialists, he would be overestimating the total number of species. Likewise, had he underestimated the proportion of specialists, he would have underestimated the total.

A short horizontal line between them indicates a mating. The male parent is usually placed on the left.

In premating behavior, they meet and shoot calcareous darts into each other's body wall. Each inserts a penis into the vagina of the other, providing sperm for future fertilization of eggs.

nuptial - suggestive of mating; many insects exhibit complex mating behavior involving odor, vision and sound

Selective breeding: Making deliberate crosses or matings of organisms so the offspring will have a desired characteristic derived from one of the parents.
Soil conservation practices: See minimal tillage practices.

Horizontal lines connecting a male and female represent mating. Vertical lines extending downward from a couple represent their children.

heterogamy - state of having gametes of different sizes produced by different mating types or sexes.

pheromone. A substance secreted by an organism to affect the behavior or development of other members of the same species; sex pheromones that attract the opposite sex for mating are used in monitoring certain insects.

Dust mites feed on dead skin that sloughs from our bodies (and probably potato chips & cookie crumbs). They live their whole lives in dark corner dust bunnies: hatching, growing, eating, defecating, mating, laying eggs.

To explain this phenomenon, de Duve suggested that the digestive enzyme was encased in some sort of membrane-bound organelle within the cell, which he dubbed the lysosome. After estimating the probable size of the lysosome, ...

The Interspinales by approximating the spinous processes help to extend the column. The Intertransversarii approximate the transverse processes, and help to bend the column to one side.
