A unit of cultural inheritance, hypothesized as analagous to the particular gene, and as naturally selected by virtue of its "phenotypic"consequences on its own survival and replication in the cultural environment.

Sociobiologists argue that many aspects of culture can best be understood through the concept of the meme, first introduced by Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book The Selfish Gene.
