Transcription and mRNA processing occur in the nucleus. The nucleus is surrounded by a double membrane. After the mature mRNA transcript is produced, it moves out of the nucleus and into the cytoplasm through pores in the nuclear membrane.

Sometimes referred to as interchromatin granule clusters, speckles are rich in splicing snRNPs and other splicing proteins necessary for pre-mRNA processing.
An additional structure of a polymerase CTD (C-terminal domain) phosphopeptide bound by the 3′-RNA processing factor Pcf11 provides insights into the coupling of transcription elongation to mRNA processing.
