The muscularis externa consists of a circular inner muscular layer and a longitudinal outer muscular layer. The circular muscle layer prevents the food from going backwards and the longitudinal layer shortens the tract.
muscularis mucosae Smooth muscle fibers around the mucosa of the gut wall, surrounding the lamina propria and surrounded by the submucosa.
mushroom Common name for a group of fungi (Basidiomycetes) that produce an aboveground reproductive structure.
The muscular coat (tunica muscularis) forms the chief bulk of the substance of the uterus. In the virgin it is dense, firm, of a grayish color, and cuts almost like cartilage.
