Nephron of the kidney A nephron is the basic structural and functional unit of the kidney. It is a tiny tubule consisting of a cluster of capillaries called the glomerulus, surrounded by a hollow bulb known as Bowman's capsule.
nephron A tubular structure that is the ?ltering unit of the kidney; consists of a glomerulus and renal tubule. PICTURE nerve cord A dorsal tubular cord of nervous tissue above the notochord of a chordate.

The Nephron The nephron consists of a cup-shaped capsule containing capillaries and the glomerulus, and a long renal tube. Blood flows into the kidney through the renal artery, which branches into capillaries associated with the glomerulus.
nephron Functional unit of kidney structure of vertebrates, consisting of a Bowman's capsule, an enclosed glomerulus, and the attached uriniferous tubule. nephrostome Ciliated, funnel-shaped opening of a nephridium.
DIAGRAM OF HOW THE NEPHRON FUNCTIONS Vertebrate kidneys have individual units called nephrons. The collection of nephrons constitutes the kidney. The urine formed by the kidney is collected and sent down the ureter to the urinary bladder.
dRTA (distal renal tubular acidosis) results from the failure of the a-intercalated cells in the distal tubule of the nephron to acidify the urine.
It is believed to be due to the fact that the kidney is completely enveloped by peritoneum which then passes backward to the vertebral column as a double layer, forming a mesonephron which permits movement.
A cup-shaped structure with a thin double membrane surrounding the glomerulus of each nephron of the vertebrate kidney. It serves as a filter to remove organic wastes, excess inorganic salts, and water.
