The Nervous System
Vertebrates all have a dorsal hollow nerve cord. It forms on the dorsal side of the embryo as the neural tube. The brain and the spinal cord derive from the neural tube.

Nervous System
The Central Nervous System
The Central Nervous System is made up of your brain, and your spinal cord. It is the main control center of your body, and the center of thought.

A regulatory system of the body that consists of neurons and neuroglial cells. The nervous system is divided into two parts, the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS).

NERVOUS SYSTEM - I'M SENSING SOMETHING
Since you're reading this page, we figure you've got a nervous system. If you were an insect you would also have a nervous system, but it would be a lot simpler.

The central nervous system consists of the encephalon or brain, contained within the cranium, and the medulla spinalis or spinal cord, lodged in the vertebral canal; ...

nervous system One of eleven major body organ systems in animals; coordinates and controls actions of internal organs and body systems, receives and processes sensory information from the external environment, ...

central nervous system (CNS) - in the vertebrates, the brain and spinal cord; derived from the neural tube.

somatic nervous system
[Gk. soma, body]
The branch of the motor division of the vertebrate peripheral nervous system composed of motor neurons that carry signals to skeletal muscles in response to external stimuli.

central nervous system (CNS) That part of the nervous system that is condensed and centrally located; for example, the brain and spinal cord of vertebrates and the brain and ganglia of insects.

"The human nervous system is probably the most intricately organized aggregate of matter on Earth.

peripheral nervous system
The sensory and motor neurons that connect to the central nervous system.
peritoneum
The thin membrane of meosdermal origin that lines the body cavity, covers the heart, and forms mesenteries.

Neurofibromatosis -- one of the most common single gene conditions affecting the human nervous system; in most cases, "cafe au lait" spots, are the only symptom; inherited as an autosomal dominant trait, with 50% being new mutations.

The central nervous system has a particularly high energy requirement, thus making it very susceptible to defects in mitochondrial function.

Animal nervous systems, particularly the nervous systems of vertebrates are not "hard-wired" at birth (or hatch or the end of metamorphosis...).

In 1897, an Italian physician named Camillo Golgi, who was investigating the nervous system by using a new staining technique he developed (and which is still sometimes used today; known as Golgi staining or Golgi impregnation), ...

(Science: anatomy) Elongated, approximately cylindrical part of the central nervous system of vertebrates that lies in the vertebral canal and from which the spinal nerves emerge.

Muenke's research program seeks to improve knowledge about the formation of the central nervous system and to elucidate the origin of developmental disabilities and mental retardation.

Pilot screens for mutations in the central nervous system have currently identified fifteen potential mutants in about 450 pedigrees screened from mutagenesis experiments targeting two regions of mouse chromosome 7 (see abstract by Rinchik, et al.).

Ganglioside A ceramide, common in membranes of the nervous system, in which an oligosaccharide is linked to the ceramide by a glucose residue.

PKU is a recessive genetic disease in which the person does not have the ability to break down the amino acid phenylalanine. The level of phenylalanine in the persons blood builds up and interferes with the development of the nervous system.
