In females, meiosis occurs in precursor cells known as oogonia. Each oogonia that initiates meiosis will divide twice to form a single oocyte and two polar bodies.
Diploid stem cells called oogonia divide by mitosis to produce more oogonia and primary oocytes.
reproduction, they produce diploid motile spores (2n zoospores; most fungi lack motile spores). Unlike fungi, the adult phase of the life cycle is diploid, producing gametes by meiosis. Eggs are produced in enlarged structures known as oogonia.
