ovary
(Science: anatomy) One of two small oval bodies situated on either side of the uterus on the posterior surface of the broad ligament. The structures in which the ova (eggs) are developed and released during ovulation.

Ovary
[L. ovarium - ovary] The female gonad: where primary oocytes develop into mature eggs through oogenesis. It is also responsible for the secretion of several female sex hormones (ie. estradiol and progesterone).

ovary -- In flowering plants, the part of the flower which encloses the ovules. When the ovary matures, it becomes the fruit.

ovary
(oh-vur-ee) [L. ovum, egg]
1) In flowers, the portion of a carpel in which the egg-containing ovules develop. (2) In animals, the structure that produces female gametes and reproductive hormones.

The Ovary
The ovary contains one or more ovules, which in turn contain one female gametophyte, also referred to in angiosperms as the embryo sac. Some plants, such as cherry, have only a single ovary which produces two ovules.

The Ovary."The ovary, thus formed from the genital ridge, is at first a mass of cells derived from the celomic epithelium; later the mass is differentiated into a central part or medulla (Fig. 1112) covered by a surface layer, ...

ovary The primary reproductive organ of a female; where eggs (ova) are produced.
overburden Overlying layers of noncommercial sediments that must be removed to reach a mineral or coal deposit.

The ovary contains many follicles composed of a developing egg surrounded by an outer layer of follicle cells. Each egg begins oogenesis as a primary oocyte.

In the first few weeks of development a human embryo develops a sexually indifferent gonad, which can become either a testis or an ovary.

If the SRY gene is present, the gonads will go on to form testes, if not an ovary will form. The female is the default sex.

Fruits are a development of the ovary wall and sometimes other flower parts as well. As seeds mature, they release the hormone auxin, which stimulates the wall of the ovary to develop into the fruit.

Oogenesis occurs in the ovary.
Each of the divisions in humans is unequal. During the first meiotic division, a large secondary oocyte and a small polar body are produced. The secondary oocyte will divide to produce an egg and a polar body.

Cells from the Chinese Hamster Ovary are shown undergoing mitosis. Beginning with a cell spread on the substrate, follow prophase, anaphase, metaphase, telophase, cytokinesis and reattachment of the two daughter cells to the substrate.

ampulla - upper region of the mammalian oviduct, near the ovary. Fertilization typically takes place in this region.

Flower: The part of an angiosperm containing the organs of reproduction (male stamen and female stigma as well as the ovary).

Progestagen A class of steroid hormone, exemplified by progesterone, that prepares the uterus for implantation of the ovum; synthesized by the corpus luteum of the ovary.
