The Ovum
The ova are developed from the primitive germ cells which are imbedded in the substance of the ovaries.

ovum The female gamete, egg.
oxidation The loss of electrons from the outer shell of an atom; often accompanied by the transfer of a proton and thus involves the loss of a hydrogen ion.

ovum pl. ova
(oh-vum) [L. egg]
The female gamete; the haploid, unfertilized egg, which is usually a relatively large, nonmotile cell.

ovum [L. ovulum - egg]. Mature female gamete or egg cell.

Paleontology. The study of the fossil record of past geo- logical periods and of the phylogenetic relationships between ancient and contemporary plant and animal species.

ovum (pl. ova)
A functional egg cell of an animal, produced by gametogenesis. Ova are frequently packed with nutritive yolk granules and are usually immobile.

Related Terms:
Gamete
Mature male or female reproductive cell (sperm or ovum) with a haploid set of chromosomes (23 for humans).

Ovum
The female gamete
Monoecious
Organisms whose individuals produce both male and female gametes; i.e. many plants. See dioecious.

ovum Mature female germ cell (egg).
oxidation The loss of an electron by an atom or molecule; sometimes addition of oxygen chemically to a substance. Opposite of reduction, in which an electron is accepted by an atom or molecule.

Gamete Mature male or female reproductive cell (sperm or ovum) with a haploid set of chromosomes (23 for humans).

fertilization The fusion of two gametes (sperm and ovum) to produce a zygote that develops into a new individual with a genetic heritage derived from both parents.

It is produced by cleavage of a fertilized ovum and consisting of a spherical layer of cells surrounding a fluid-filled cavity. The blastula follows the morula and precedes the gastrula in the development sequence.

Gamete A sperm or an ovum.
Gene In Mendelian terms - a unit of inheritance. In molecular terms - a region of DNA which contains the information to create either a functional RNA or a polypeptide chain.

Sperm are some of the most active cells in the body, their motility responsible for getting them to the site of an ovum for fertilization.

[Gr. holos - whole, entire]. The pattern of cleavage in which the entire ovum is divided into cells. It is also called complete cleavage and is usually found in embryos with little to moderate amounts of yolk.

A small cell (which eventually disintegrates) that is the by-product of meiosis in female animals. One functional ovum and potentially three polar bodies result from meiosis of each primary oocyte.

Double fertilization: The union of one male gametophyte nucleus with the ovum nucleus and another male gametophyte nucleus with the polar nuclei to form the endosperm in seed plants. See also pollen grain.

egg -- (1) A large gamete without flagellae that is fertilized by a sperm cell. An egg cell is also called an ovum. (2) A complex multicellular structure in which an animal embryo develops.

Meiosis produces the gametes called eggs (ovum, sing., ova, plural) and sperm. It involves two cell divisions and therefore four cells result from each meiotic event.

zona pellucida - a thick extracellular matrix surrounding the mammalian ovum (egg) which binds sperm and initiates the acrosome reaction of the sperm.

Progestagen A class of steroid hormone, exemplified by progesterone, that prepares the uterus for implantation of the ovum; synthesized by the corpus luteum of the ovary.
