The loss of electrons.

Oxidation and Reduction Reactions
Oxidation is the loss of electrons or hydrogen atoms. Oxidation reactions release energy.
Reduction is gain of electrons or hydrogen atoms and is associated with a gain of energy.

Oxidation
Primary alcohols generally give aldehydes or carboxylic acids upon oxidation, while secondary alcohols give ketones. Tertiary alcohols resist oxidation.

Oxidation-reduction reaction A reaction that transfers electrons.
Oxidative phosphorylation The process in which ATP is formed as a result of the transfer of electrons from NADH or FADH2 to O2 by a series of electron carriers.

Oxidations and reductions always go together. They are called redox reactions.
