[edit] Paralogy
Homologous sequences are paralogous if they were separated by a gene duplication event: if a gene in an organism is duplicated to occupy two different positions in the same genome, then the two copies are paralogous.

Paralogy
Describes the evolutionary origin of a locus. A locus in two species is said to be paralogous when it has arisen by gene duplication in one species. Cf orthology.

Homology
Similarities in DNA or protein sequences between individuals of the same species or among different species. These two types of homology are called paralogy and orthology.
