pericycle
circle of plant tissue of stems and roots between the cortex and stele

Pericycle - the outer boundary of the stele. Secondary roots branch from it.
Xylem - arranged in bundles in a spokelike fashion
Phloem - alternates with xylem ...

pericycle
(pair-eh-sy-kul) [Gk. peri, around + kyklos, circle]
A layer of cells just inside the endodermis of a root that may become meristematic and begin dividing again.
periderm ...

pericycle
A layer of cells just inside the endodermis of a root that may become meristematic and begin dividing again.

pericycle Root tissue sandwiched between the endodermis and the phloem; it is the outermost layer of the stele; meristematic region that gives rise to branch roots.

In many of these plants the endodermis is discarded, together with the cortex, when the periderm develops in the pericycle.
