Phenotypic variance
Variance of the phenotype due to genotypic and environmental factors combined. Phenotypic variance = genetic variance + environmental variance.

Genetic variation -- a phenotypic variance of a trait in a population attributed to genetic heterogeneity.

The proportion of total phenotypic variance at the population level that is contributed by genetic variance (also called heritability in the broad sense).

In the broad sense it is measured by the total genetic variance divided by the total phenotypic variance. In the narrow sense it is measured by the genetic variance due to additive genes divided by the total phenotypic variance.

4 and the genetic contribution to the phenotypic variance is 48%. By comparing to others publication of similar situation, We estimate that we would need approximately 200 backcross transgenic animals in total to map the QTLs.

heritability (in the narrow sense)A measure of the extent to which genes inherited from parents determine phenotypes; defined as the ratio of the additive genetic variance to total phenotypic variance; also called realized heritability.
