Chemoautotrophs use the energy secured by oxidizing some inorganic substance in their surroundings.

Most plants are photoautotrophs, which means that they are able to synthesize food directly from inorganic compounds using light energy - for example from the sun, instead of eating other organisms or relying on nutrients derived from them.

Members of this genus are photoautotrophs that can generate chemical energy through an electron transport chain in the cytoplasmic membrane that is associated with a light-harvesting complex housed in a specialized organelle called the chlorosome.

These terms are often combined. So, a "photoautotroph" is an organism that, like plants, gets its energy from light and its carbon from CO2. Decomposers are often chemoheterotrophs; they may obtain energy and carbon from the same source.

Plants are photoautotrophic. However, some eucaryotic microorganisms are not limited to just one nutritional mode.

Most plants are autotrophs, as are many protists and bacteria. Contrast with consumer. Autotrophs may be photoautotrophic, using light energy to manufacture food, or chemoautotrophic, using chemical energy.

Any organism too small to be seen by the naked eye, e.g. bacteria, viruses, protozoa, some fungi, and some algae. Microorganisms can be divided into four nutritional groupings: photoautotrophs, photoheterotrophs, chemoautotrophs, ...

Energy is used to produce new cells / remains fixed in that organism
