phylum
one of the main groups into which the animal and plant kingdoms are divided; plural, phyla

Phylum Nematodes (Roundworms)
The round worms or nematodes live practically everywhere. They have only longitudinal muscles and so have a characteristic whip-like motion. Most are free-living and some such as the hook worm are parasitic.

Phylum:___________________
As a member of a group, you will be exploring the world of invertebrates. Your group will be responsible for creating a lesson during which you will fascinate your classmates with your knowledge of certain invertebrates.

Phylum Euglenophyta
Organisms in the Euglenophyta have two flagella, a contractile vacuole, a photoreceptive eyespot, several chloroplasts, lack a cell wall, and can live as either autotrophs or heterotrophs.

phylum -- n. A category in the hierarchy of animal classification between class and kingdom; phyla- pl.

phylum pl. phyla
[Gk. phylon, race, tribe]
A taxonomic category; phyla are divided into classes.

Phylum, Phyla (pl.): One of the major divisions of the animal kingdom.
Physical Control: Control of pests by physical means such as heat, cold, sound waves, etc.

phylum The broadest taxonomic category within kingdoms (pl.: phyla). PICTURE
phytochrome A pigment in plant leaves that detects day length and generates a response; partly responsible for photoperiodism.

Phylum: The broadest classification for animals. Compare species.
Phytoplankton: The plant and algae component of the plankton; the primary producers of almost all marine food webs. Compare zooplankton.

Subphylum Vertebrata
(Unranked group) Hyperoartia (lampreys)

Subclass †Pteraspidomorphi
Class †Thelodonti

phylum A chief category, between kingdom and class, of taxonomic classifications into which are grouped organisms of common descent that share a fundamental pattern of organization.

a fluke (Phylum Platyhelminthes) that causes its periwinkle (mollusk) host to move up close to the surface in the intertidal zone where it is more likely to be eaten by the sea gull that serves as the alternate host; ...

Next is the Phylum. You are PHYLUM - CHORDATA. So when you were a fetus (in the womb before you were born) you had something called a notochord. That's a rod made out of cartilage.

The phylum comprising the sponges.
PPT. A measure of the salt content of sea water in terms of kg salt per kg of water, reckoned in parts per thousand.

Cestoda
a phylum of Platyhelminthes containing the parasitic tapeworms, the adults of which are intestinal parasites of vertebrates.

Phylum: A subdivision of a kingdom encompassing all forms of life with the same distinctive body plan. [plural = phyla].
Class: a higher taxon consisting of one or more orders and distinct from other taxa of similar rank ...

Classification of Living Things - Phylum
The next group that scientists have developed to further classify living things is the Phylum (plural: phyla).

Botryllus schlosseri: A clonal hermaphrodite (Phylum Chordata, Subphylum Tunicata, Class Ascidian=sea squirts). It grows fast, reproduces weekly, and thus, a good model for genetic studies of protochordates.

insect - an animal of class Hexapoda (or Insecta) of subphylum Uniramia of phylum Arthropoda.

With a few exceptions, most notably the sponges (Phylum Porifera), animals have bodies differentiated into separate tissues.

Comparison of the phylogenetic classification of the rRNA sequences with our clustering results showed that each phylum usually corresponds to one or two major clusters that are adjacently ranked in our analysis.

Archaebacteria A phylum of organisims distinct from both prokaryotes and eukaryotes.
Ascertainment The method by which individuals (and families) come to attention for genetic study.

Class
In classification of plants and animals a division of a phylum and divided into orders.
Related Terms:
Phylon
A group of animals or plants constructed on a similar general plan, a primary division in classification.

Since Georges Cuvier named them in the early 19th century, phyla (singular phylum) have been seen as distinct and natural groupings within animals (arguably not in plants, where the level is Division).

We are chordates, a phylum that survived in the Cambrian era 500 million years ago by the skin of its teeth in competition with the brilliantly successful arthropods. Our ecological success came against humbling odds." ...

Further, each kingdom is broken down recursively until each species is separately classified. The order is: Domain; Kingdom; Phylum; Class; Order; Family; Genus; Species.

For single-celled eukaryotes, cilia and flagella are essential for the locomotion of individual organisms. Protozoans belonging to the phylum Ciliophora are covered with cilia, ...
