pollen tube
tube formed by a pollen grain; transports sperms to the eggs in an ovary

pollen tube -- In seed plants, the extension of the male gametophyte as it emerges from the pollen grain in search of the female gametophyte.

pollen tube
A slender structure produced from a pollen grain after pollination.
polyp
The asexual reproducing, normally sedentary form of coelenterates such as the sea anemone.

The pollen tube with its contents makes up the mature male gametophyte generation.
Double fertilization
The pollen tube enters the ovule through the micropyle and ruptures.

From each pollen grain, a pollen tube grows out attempting to travel into the ovary by creating a path through the female tissue. The vegetative (or tube) and generative nuclei of the pollen grain pass into its respective pollen tube.

The process of pollination being accomplished, the pollen tube grows through the stigma and style toward the ovules in the ovary. The germ cell in the pollen grain divides and releases two sperm cells which move down the pollen tube.

[L. stilus, stake, stalk]
In angiosperms, the stalk of a carpel, down which the pollen tube grows.
substrate
[L. substratus, strewn under]
(1) The substance on which an enzyme works. (2) The foundation to which an organism is attached.

siphonogamy A reproductive process in seed plants in which a pollen tube carries the sperm cells to the egg located within the integumented megasporangium.
siphonoglyph Ciliated furrow in the gullet of sea anemones.

This less appreciated mechanism is the basis for differential fertilization which includes sperm selection as opposed to pollen selection in plants. This should not be confused with sperm competition / pollen tube competition (link to a ...
