Other uses for the new high-density maps are to study candidate genes by substituting an informative short tandem repeat polymorphism as a surrogate for a less-informative gene and to explore complex, multifactorial, or polygenic disorders.

A disorder which is caused by mutations in just one gene (such as haemophilia), as opposed to polygenic disorders (such as hypertension) which involve the interaction of several genes.
