Pribnow box

Biology Pre-mRNAPrimary growth

Pribnow box --> promoter
(Science: molecular biology) A region of dNA to which rNA polymerase binds before initiating the transcription of DNA into rNA.

Pribnow box A promoter component of prokaryotic genes that has the consensus sequence 5'- TATAAA-3' located 10 base pairs downstream from the transcription start site.

Pribnow box
Relatively invariant sequence of six nucleotides (consensus TATAAT) in prokaryotic promoters centred at the position minus 10 (10 base pairs upstream from the transcription start site). In eukaryotes the analogous is called TATA box.

Promoter (Pribnow box, TATA box) - Operon (Lac operon, Trp operon) - Terminator Enhancer - Repressor (Lac repressor, Trp repressor) - Silencer Histone methylation

The sequence at -10 is called the Pribnow box and usually consists of the six nucleotides TATAAT. The Pribnow box is absolutely essential to start transcription in prokaryotes. The other sequence at -35 usually consists of the six nucleotides TTGACA.
