Here it is pumped out the pulmonary semilunar valve and travels through the pulmonary artery to the lungs. From there, blood flows back through the pulmonary vein to the left atrium.
The pulmonary artery is the only artery that carries oxygen-poor blood. The pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs. In the lungs, gas exchange occurs, carbon dioxide diffuses out, oxygen diffuses in.
The results of sharpness filtration are particularly evident in the fluorescence image of a bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cell (below) in which the microtubules are so clearly defined. These images were integrated over 1 second.
