Secondary xylem

Biology Secondary StructureSecretin

Secondary xylem is the xylem that is formed during secondary growth from vascular cambium. Secondary xylem is also found in members of the "gymnosperm" groups Gnetophyta and Ginkgophyta and to a lesser extent in members of the Cycadophyta.

secondary xylem Xylem produced by the vascular cambium in a woody plant stem or root; wood. PICTURE ...

secondary xylem
Tissue produced by vascular cambium and composed of both tracheids and vessel elements.
secondary palate
the roof of the mouth in vertebrates formed anteriorly by a bony projection of the upper jaw forms the hard palate.

secondary xylem All xylem tissue formed by the vascular cambium in woody plants.

In the very center is a pith, surrounded by primary xylem and a small fringe of secondary xylem [wood, MJF]. Then there is black gunk and an open white area.

In perennial plants, xylem is laid down in multiple phases. Primary xylem is one of the tissues left behind by the apical meristem. Secondary xylem is laid down by vascular cambium on the outside of the xylem column.

Cambium - In older parts of the root, another meristem forms between the xylem and phloem. Mitosis in the cambium produces new "secondary xylem" to the inside and secondary phloem to the outside.
