Only sex-linked or X-linked recessive traits "skip generations." That is because genes on the X chromosome are expressed in the male but usually not in the female since she has another X which will usually have the normal allele.

Hemophilia A is a blood clotting disorder caused by a mutant gene encoding the clotting factor VIII.
Remember that sex-linked genes are on the X chromosome, one of the sex chromosomes. Linkage groups are invariably the same number as the pairs of homologous chromosomes an organism possesses.

From this, he concluded that (1) some traits were sex-linked, (2) the trait was probably carried on the sex chromosome (ie the X and Y chromosomes), and (3) other genes were probably carried on specific chromosomes as well.
