Skin cell

Biology SkinSlime molds

Skin cells synthesize melanin and carotenes, which give the skin its color. The skin also assists in the synthesis of vitamin D. Children lacking sufficient vitamin D develop bone abnormalities known as rickets.

iridocyte A fish skin cell that contains reflecting crystals made of guanine.
iridophore A chromatophore with light-reflecting crystals.

Sunlight alters tumor suppressor genes in skin cells; cigarette smoke causes changes in lung cells, making them more sensitive to carcinogenic compounds in smoke.

These intermediates have been shown to be involved in various biological effects in cultured human skin cells (e.g. cell death) and skin (e.g. erythema).

In June 2007, three laboratories reported that introducing extra copies of only 4 genes into adult mouse skin cells (fibroblasts) enables them to regain the properties of ES cells.

Illustrated in Figure 2 are a pair of fibroblast deer skin cells that have been labeled with fluorescent probes and photographed in the microscope to reveal their internal structure.

They can damage the DNA of lung cells much like the sun damages skin cells.

The cell walls of these onion skin cells can be easily seen.
Nucleus
The nuclei can be seen in the photograph of human cheek cells below.

A skin cell was inserted inside the enucleated egg to serve as a new nucleus. The egg began to divide after it was stimulated with a chemical called ionomycin. The results were limited in success.

Proteins that bond the membrane of one cell to its neighbor create the desmosomes. You will find desmosomes in your skin cells. All of those proteins hold your skin together.

Many animals have their skin composed of epithelium. Vertebrates have keratin in their skin cells to reduce water loss. Many other animals secrete mucus or other materials from their skin, such as earthworms do.
