Smooth ER

Biology Small nuclear RNASmooth muscle

Smooth ER has its purpose in the cell. It acts as a storage organelle. It is important in the creation and storage of steroids. It also stores ions in solution that the cell may need at a later time.

Smooth ER
The smooth ER has functions in several metabolic processes.

smooth ER
That portion of the endoplasmic reticulum that is free of ribosomes.
smooth muscle ...

smooth ER The portion of endoplasmic reticulum that lacks ribosomes.
smooth muscle Type of muscle tissue found in the walls of the hollow organs; visceral muscle.

The endoplasmic reticulum or ER is an organelle found in all eukaryotic cells that is an interconnected network of tubules, vesicles and cisternae.

Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (smooth ER)
Have no ribosomes attached and often appear more tubular than the rough ER
Necessary for steroid synthesis, metabolism and detoxification, lipid synthesis
Numerous in the liver ...

A network of membranous tubules in the cytoplasm of a cell, endoplasmic reticulum is involved in the production of proteins, and other functions. Rough ER is studded with ribosomes; smooth ER is not.

endoplasmic reticulum (ER) A network of membranous tubules in the cytoplasm of a cell; involved in the production of phospholipids, proteins, and other functions. Rough ER is studded with ribosomes; smooth ER is not. PICTURE ...

reticulum (ER) (EN-doe-PLAZ-mik reh-TIK-yoo-lum) An organelle made up of interconnected tubes and flattened sacs. There are two kinds of ER: rough (because it is dotted with ribosomes) ER, which processes newly made proteins, and smooth ER, ...

Smooth ER plays different functions depending on the specific cell type including lipid and steroid hormone synthesis, breakdown of lipid-soluble toxins in liver cells, and control of calcium release in muscle cell contraction.

Rough ER connects to the nuclear envelope through which the messenger RNA (mRNA) that is the blueprint for proteins travels to the ribosomes. Smooth ER; ...

reticulum (ER) An extensive system of cytoplasmic membranes that comprises about half the total cell membrane. The region of the ER that binds ribosomes is called the rough ER, and the region that is devoid of ribosomes is called the smooth ER.
