stipules -- Paired appendages found at the base of the leaves of many flowering plants.
stipule one of a pair of leaflets found at the base of a leaf where it joins the stem.
A stipule, present on the leaves of many dicotyledons, is an appendage on each side at the base of the petiole resembling a small leaf.
The petiole has usually some sort of an appendage on each side of its base, which is called the stipule. The green parenchyma of the leaf is covered with a thin epiderm pierced with closable microscopic openings, known as stomata.
