Stop Codon
A stop codon is a trinucleotide sequence within a messenger RNA (mRNA) molecule that signals a halt to protein synthesis.

stop codon The codon on a messenger RNA molecule where protein synthesis stops.

Stop codon One of the three codons (UAA, UAG, UGA) which cause chain termination at the end of translation.
Structural gene A gene coding for a polypeptide or functional RNA product.

Stop codon. See Termination codon.
Structure-functionalism. The scientific tradition that stresses the relationship between a physical structure and its function, for example, the related disciplines of anatomy and physiology.

Stop codon
See termination codon.

Termination codon
Any of three mRNA sequences (UGA, UAG, UAA) that do not code for an amino acid and thus signal the end of protein synthesis. Also known as stop codon. See codon.

STOP CODON - A codon (UAA, UAG, UGA) which terminates translation.
STREPTAVIDIN - A bacterial analog of egg white avidin.

The three stop codons have been given names: UAG is amber, UGA is opal (sometimes also called umber), and UAA is ochre.

A long DNA sequence that is unin- terrupted by a stop codon and encodes part or all of a protein. (See Reading frame.) Operator.

One Gene - One enzyme Theory Oogenesis Ooplasmic transfer Open Reading Frame (ORF)DNA sequence beginning with ATG and read in triplets until it ends with a STOP codon. An ORF is potentially able to encode a polypeptide.

Translation termination occurs when a ribosome encounters one of the three stop codons (UAA, UAG, or UGA). These codons are not recognized by a tRNA but by protein release factors. RF-1 recognizes UAA and UAG, RF-2 recognizes UAA and UGA.

So to find a gene, the program looks for a start and a stop codon?
Oh, I wish it were as easy as just finding a start and finding a stop. A start codon for a protein is "ATG." You're going to bump into a start codon ATG pretty often.

Mutation that changes a codon or an amino acid to a termination or stop codon and leads to premature termination of translation.

The algorithm assigns penalties and rewards at each step based on reading-frame mismatch, existence of in-frame stop codon, and terminating exon not ending in a stop codon.

of representing candidate solutions in a robust way does not arise in nature, because the method of representation used by evolution, namely the genetic code, is inherently robust: with only a very few exceptions, such as a string of stop codons, ...

A mutation that results in a stop codon so that incomplete proteins are produced, it is called a nonsense mutation.
A mutation that produces a functioning protein is called a silent mutation.

Everything between the stop codon and the polyA tail is considered to be 3' untranslated (see Figure 4). The 3' untranslated region may affect the translation efficiency of the mRNA or the stability of the mRNA.

Selenocysteine is incorporated into some proteins at a UGA codon, which is normally a stop codon.
Pyrrolysine is used by some methanogens in enzymes that they use to produce methane.

Cistron: A DNA segment coding for a specific polypeptide, and includes its own start and stop codons. When an mRNA encodes two or more proteins, it is called polycistronic.
