synapomorphy -- A character which is derived, and because it is shared by the taxa under consideration, is used to infer common ancestry.

synapomorphy Shared, evolutionarily derived character states that are used to recover patterns of common descent among two or more species.

A synapomorphy is a technical term that is used when you know that two animals have inherited the same characteristic. First, they have the same characteristic and you know that they inherited it together.

The synapomorphy of this clade is the presence of small saccules (alveoli) below the cell membrane surface. Major groups in this kingdom are the ciliates, dinoflagellates and apicomplexans (a group of parasites that cause malaria and other diseases).
