Progress is being made on several fronts to introduce new traits into plants using recombinant DNA technology.

 


Transgenic Plants
The only plasmid that plant cells take up is the Ti (tumor-inducing) plasmid from the bacterium Agrobacterium. The plasmid transferred by this bacterium causes plants to form a gall.

Used to generate transgenic plants, binary vectors are cloning vectors which are able to replicate in both E. coli and Agrobacterium tumefaciens, which are bacteria that are often used in biotechnology.

It can also refer to transgenic animals or transgenic plants, such as Bt corn. Genetically altered Mammalian cells, such as Chinese Hamster ovarian cells, are also widely used to manufacture pharmaceuticals.

Bacillus thuringiensis: This bacteria is pathogenic to insects and the gene for its toxin is used to create transgenic plants with their own insecticide.
Bacteriophage: A virus that infects a bacterium.

Animals usually are made transgenic by having a small sequence of foreign DNA injected into a fertilized egg or developing embryo. Transgenic plants can be made by introducing foreign DNA into a variety of different tissues.

Transgenic plants and animals that make important drugs. Researchers are seeking to produce greater quantities of useful medicines at less expense. That way, the medicines could be available to more people who need them.
