Tunica-Corpus model of the apical meristem (growing tip). The epidermal (L1) and subepidermal (L2) layers form the outer layers called the tunica. The inner L3 layer is called the corpus.

Urochordates are the tunicates. The tunicates are sessile animals that are filter feeders. They look like a small pouch, are often transparent or translucent and have no head.
When they are disturbed, tunicates tend to squirt water out. Water passes into a pharynx and out numerous gill slits, the only chordate characteristic that remains in adults.
Botryllus schlosseri: A clonal hermaphrodite (Phylum Chordata, Subphylum Tunicata, Class Ascidian=sea squirts). It grows fast, reproduces weekly, and thus, a good model for genetic studies of protochordates.
A group of planktonic tunicates that secrete a gelatinous house, used to strain unsuitable particles (large particles are rejected).
