The pointed centre of an oyster shell. It is the oldest part and surrounded by concentric lines of growth.

umbo pl. umbones. One of the prominences on either side of the hinge region in a bivalve mollusc shell. Also, the "beak" of a brachiopod shell.
The membrane is concave outward, and the point of deepest concavity"the umbo"is slightly below the center. Running upward and slightly forward from the umbo is a reddish-yellow streak produced by the manubrium of the malleus.
